A glittering gown. A gorgeous glow. It’s prom season. Showcase more than fabulous hair and killer shoes; your skin should compliment your ensemble on prom night. Let’s discuss your color choices and your tan:

  • Bold, solid colors like hot pink, orange, and yellow work well with a lighter tan. This is good news for the ladies whose skin does not like to hold a tan. For these colors, and peaches or other warm colors, maintain a subtle tan -- nothing too dark.

  • If the dress you chose for that special evening is green, gold, red, or orange, then staying with a medium dark tone (3 or 4) will best suit your overall look.

  • With spring colors on the racks, you can count on more than a few pastels at prom. These colors are perfect for a bold, dark tan. Perhaps your dress is an emerald green or another jewel tone -- stunning colors against that rich, deep tan.

Still looking for a dress? You can choose exactly how dark you want to go, and shop for an extremely tailored look. Here’s what you are in for:

There are exceptions to the rules, of course, and if you can break the rules and look fantastic, then you are a true artist! Prom is still a few weeks away, but regular visits to the tanning salon are an absolute must to maintaining whatever skin tone best suits your dress. A good idea is to come get a good base tan and then get a spray tan just before prom. Remember, after prom comes summer! The days of baring your arms and legs are only a few weeks away! Stop by or call, and we can help you with a schedule, show you our amazing specials, and you can see why we are the cleanest beach in town!

Nothing is simple anymore. Not even ordering a coffee is simple. Do you want a latte? Is it made with coconut milk or dairy? Do you want it dark and hot, like your tan? Days are packed with responsibilities, deadlines, and choices. This is one great benefit of tanning -- relaxing in warmth, escaping from all the noise of life. You’ll feel relaxed, refreshed, and lovely. Book a session, then grab yourself that skinny, lavender-vanilla latte and head for some more “you time.”  A perfect addition to pampering yourself is having a manicure and pedicure. The next question is, out of all the choices, what color looks amazing with your tan?

It’s hard to go wrong with burning oranges, bright pinks, and deeply blushing corals. These colors evoke that beach sunset we’ve got hanging in our memories, and are sure to make your deep tan pop. Even darker shades of these colors can add some drama for fun summer nights.

Warm colors aren’t the only colors to stand out against a tan: light greens and blues offer a cool accent against the stunning sight of your glow. Try to look for kelly green, mint green, sky blue, or a color that catches the shades of the light patches of a tropical ocean.

Not all bathing beauties want to flash with color; sometimes a diva needs her subtle side to show. Remember that latte you were about to sip during your pedicure? Take a hint from those creamy colors: warm light browns, toasted pinks, caramels, and creams. These lovely colors can be seen all over the beach by looking at the sand, the color of shells, and now they can feature on your lovely hands and toes!

Whatever color you choose, it will be flattering against the beauty of you. Love yourself! Take the time to de-stress in one of our tanning beds, or in our warm, sunless VersaSpa tanning booth. Give yourself a mini spa day! Come see why we’re "The cleanest beach in town!"

DIY scrubs and lotions are fun, and they can help you feel like a thrifty goddess. Your tan will last longer and your skin will thank you for all that pampering when you regularly exfoliate and moisturize. But Tan Unique has got your back, too. The VersaSpa sunless tanning offered at our salon will have you feeling like a green goddess (go from thrifty to green)! The pre-tanning and post-tanning treatments provide you skin with aloe, DHA, soy proteins, and soothing botanicals. Plants aren’t just easy on the eyes, they also nourish your skin!

Hydrated, healthy skin is essential for getting the most out of your sunless tanning. The pH balancing skin prep treatment in the VersaSpa uses a blend of green tea extracts and amino acids. These ingredients balance and condition skin, which will give that even tan you desire. Selecting the treatment isn’t difficult, either. You choose your glow. Technology is amazing, and our booth talks you through your options while providing visual instructions. Customize your tan and experience with four different tanning levels, plus your nourishing treatments. All skin types welcome.

After you step into our warm booth and select your first two treatments, the final step is your post-tanning! VersaSpa offers a super hydrating treatment blend of skin soothing botanicals, soy proteins, green tea extracts and other professional-grade ingredients. It diminishes fine lines and deepens the beautiful color of your sunless tan. Seal in that moisture and keep your tan lasting longer!

We strive to provide a relaxing experience. Did your heated, specialized treatment remind you of a spa? Perfect. Do you feel pampered, your skin rejuvenated, and your glow restored? Excellent.  Whether you are tanning in our traditional beds, or you chose VersaSpa sunless tanning, keeping your skin nourished is important. During the winter and after some tanning sessions, skin has a tendency to dry out, keeping your skin healthy maintains your glow. In a continued spirit of DIY, check out our scrub recipes on the last blog, we found a few great recipes for lotion bars you can make at home! Scrubs and lotion bars call for some of the same ingredients -- make a day of it (or an afternoon) and beat the cold and rain with some warm activities: tanning and DIY projects to keep that skin soft and nourished.

Lavender Lotion Bars (recipe courtesy of “Pink When” blog)

  • 1/4 cup Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
  • 1/4 cup Shea Butter
  • 1/4 cup 100% ORGANIC Beeswax
  • 1/4 tsp Vitamin E Oil
  • Lavender essential oil

You’ll need to have silicone molds ready, I had some cute ones I picked up from Target, but some folks pour into small canning jars, too. Next, melt the coconut oil, Shea butter, and beeswax together. You can use smaller amounts, just make sure you measure each out equally. Most people melt them together using a bowl over hot water. Stir in the Vitamin E oil.  Let it cool for just a minute and then grab your essential oil. I put in at least 15 drops of the oil and then poured into my molds. Let it cool!

This next tutorial shows a different recipe, getting your fancy on, with grapefruit and lavender oil!

I make lotion bars almost every winter. They last, keep my skin soft, and smell amazing. I make plenty so I can gift and share!

Keep your skin hydrated in between your tanning sessions! Ready to book your next appointment?  Please call (479) 785-1185 to make an appointment or visit us at our salon on 4500 Rogers Ave. Walk-ins are welcome!

The luxury of tanning in a salon not only gives your skin that gorgeous glow, but also boosts your spirits and helps you de-stress. In past blogs we’ve discussed skin care. It’s no secret that skin looks best with that nourished look of a tan + moisturizer, but before a tan it’s best to exfoliate. There’s some science behind that: removing dead skin cells leaves your skin looking healthier and your tan lasting longer.

Some people like to invest in exfoliation products, but there are those of you who love Pinterest-ing. We reviewed top Pinterest boards on homemade exfoliation and found great recipes you mix at home!

girl on beach

It’s still pretty cold out, but this is the time to work on getting ready for those hot summer days: hit the gym, the tanning salon, and try some fun new trends. The last blog introduced you to contouring with makeup, after establishing a beautiful foundation with a glowing tan. This blog takes contouring that foundation one step further: body contouring. Just like contouring with makeup, body contouring highlights the areas you want to show off and helps to downplay those areas we all prefer to ignore (ahem, cellulite). They say (you know, the experts) body contouring is the next big trend. We decided to see how it works and let you in on your choices if experimenting with contouring sounds like a fun way to pass the winter days.

Your winter look perked up quite a bit with that new hair and that new tan, right? But your makeup might need a color switch. You’ll probably invest in some new foundation at the very least. Don’t throw out your old color just yet, especially if it’s a foundation stick! See if you can repurpose any of it for the big beauty trend: contouring.

Girl with Pink Hair

After the lights and excitement of the winter holidays fade, January and February stretch on into cold, drab days. A stint in the tanning bed or a session with spray-on tanning can brighten the cloudy months. What goes better with a healthy glow than a pop of hair color (aside from a new outfit)? How do you decide what color best suits your skin tone?

girl on boy's back

Dress to impress by following these few simple guidelines in determining what color goes best (and worst) with your skin tone.

Fair Complexions

What To Wear: If you have fair Type 1 or 2 skin, it can make getting and keeping a tan difficult (Read our blog on Finding Your Skin Type here). We recommend wearing bold solid colors to bring out the warmer tones in your skin. If you want to better set off your complexion, try wearing bright colors like hot pink or canary yellow. Lighter skin tones tend to fall in the cooler shades of skin undertones (blue/pink based tones). Warmer colors will also compliment your skin, such as peach or tan colors.

What NOT To Wear: People with Type 1 or 2 skin should never dress in solid black or white. It completely drains any color you could potentially squeeze out of your complexion.

Medium Complexions

What To Wear: If you have a medium complexion (Type 3 or 4 skin) then you should look for more earthy colors, such as green, gold, reds, oranges, etc. Neutral colors such as cream and taupe are also good for enhancing the gorgeous caramel color of people with medium complexions.

What NOT To Wear: Since people with a medium skin type tend to have a warm undertone, we recommend avoiding any cool colors. Too many pastels are guaranteed to make your skin take on a grayish tinge.

Dark Complexions

What To Wear: Dark complexions (Type 5 or 6 skin) look fantastic in pastels and bright whites. Dark colors are also flattering, although you should have more jewel tones, such as emerald green or sapphire blue. Eggplant-purple, deep red, and gray are also great with setting off dark skin.

What NOT To Wear: Earthy colors such as brown, navy blue, or black don’t go particularly well with dark skin tones. These types of colors will wash you out and won’t do anything to enhance your dark complexion.

Pro Tip

If you particularly like a color that we advised against, don’t be afraid to use it as an accent piece! Go ahead and add some flair with a colorful pair of shoes, belt, scarf, or bag.

Blonde Girl Beside Lake

Many people make the mistake of choosing their clothes based off a specific season rather than their skin tone. Wintertime used to mean a lot of pasty complexions that went well with subdued colors. However, thanks to indoor tanning salons, people can sport their ideal beautiful bronzed glow all year round! So trying to make your wardrobe fit a seasonal theme really isn’t doing anyone any favors. That’s why it’s important to know which colors will complement you and which ones can wash you out.

By follow a few simple guidelines, we can help you determine which colors will help bring out your gorgeous tan, and leave you looking fantastic and feeling confident!

Determine Your Skin Undertone

The first step to finding the ideal color scheme for your wardrobe is to determine your skin undertone. People can usually be classified as having either a warm or cool undertone. Here are some fairly easy ways to tell which category your beautiful skin belongs to:

Paper Test: The easiest way to test your undertone would be to hold up a plain white sheet of paper to your face or arm and determine which color is most prominent; if your skin looks pink or blueish, then you have a cool skin tone. If your skin looks yellowish, orangeish, or even greenish then you have a warm skin tone.

Veins Check Test: Check the underside of your wrist and determine which color your veins most closely resembles. Blue or purple veins belong to cool undertones, while green or yellowish veins belong to warm undertones.

Jewelry Test: Use a bracelet or ring to determine what your skin undertone is. White or silver jewelry will compliment cool skin tones, while gold jewelry will look better on warm skin tones.

Once you’ve determined which skin undertone fits you the best, then you can move on to determining which warm shades or cool shades work with your overall skin type. For simplicities sake, warm tones tend to work better with earthy shades, while cool skin tones tend to work best with jewel tones or silver shades.
